Extraordinary Spaces for Kids

The Learning Commons at Chinook Park Elementary has been an exciting gathering place for our students.  Thousands of kids pass through these doors into a world of curiosity and exploration.  While this space has worked very hard for our students through many years - it shows.  Revitalizing the library is a clear priority that offers immediate advantages to our students, staff and the greater community.

A great school library has an enriching and lasting impact on a child’s learning and their future. Whether it’s the excitement children have from choosing new books, or hearing about guest readers and events, all libraries equip students with skills and habits for lifelong learning and literacy.

Revitalizing our Learning Commons will benefit our students in many ways:

  • The new floorplan and seating emphasizes collaboration, communication, movement, and creativity.  This creates a welcoming, inclusive and culturally appropriate space.

  • When students have input into their learning environment - they feel supported, safe and accepted when engaging in group collaboration.

  • Children have an innate need to move - flexible materials and seating will allow them to move, rock, sway or stand without disrupting their classmates.

  • This modernized approach to common areas has proven to support flexible teaching approaches and frequent interactions between groups of learners.

The entire project is estimated to cost $55,000. School Council has already committed $15,000 to the first installment of the project: these flexible seating pieces will arrive in May. We are looking to raise $10,000 to purchase the next installment of modular seating to improve on the Learning Commons. This is a multi-year fundraising initiative and we are very grateful for any support you are able to offer.

We have partnered with ATB Cares & Education Matters for this initiative, as every donation given between May 1 and May 31 will be matched up to 20%.

Did you know that your employer may have a matching gift program too?  Bell Canada, RBC, Benevity, Suncor, and ATCO are just a few examples of great philanthropic organizations that will match your gift when you decide to donate.
